VINTAGE AND ALL THAT IT OFFERS
VINTAGE: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS?
We see vintage trends everywhere we look today. We see it on the runway and nobody even realizes it. Remember that saying, "Fashion trends always come back around to repeat themselves?" Exception: The best designer in the world, Coco Chanel. With so many iconic pieces, here designs haven't went out of style, no never. Her creations will never leave. They can be transformed, copied, and lifted to a higher level. Let's not loose track of the subject. Most people don't stop to realize what's behind vintage pieces are fashion styles that have continued to repeat themselves. These styles are still some of the longest lasting fashion trends.
A PARADE I can't imagine anyone who would not want to show off their display of vintage pieces. Just think of all that glamorous costume jewelry, and what about the gloves and hats? Oh to parade them around in full exhibit in front of everyone. The tiny details, like a hat pin or brooch, to look at the embellishment of a vintage shawl or wrap up close. There's a museum of vintage accessories out their to be adorned.
NOT A COSTUME: Vintage has always played a role in the costume department. That's widely known and in fact expected. From Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn to Madonna and Cher, and of course we could never leave out our pin-up girl Betty Page. Let's shift gears on the costumes though. We're seeing a lot of '50's femine looks on the runway. There's some impressive patterns and majestic fabrics out there that are taking things to an extra, ultra level. Feel free to show off your own style, mix it up, you don't need to feel like wearing a vintage piece or costume jewelry is for "dress up."
WHICH VINTAGE TREND HAS LASTED THE LONGEST? That more tailored look we've all have grown to know is calling out again. Chanel said to mix the faux pearls with the real pearls. She has never been wrong on anything. Taking vintage pieces with modern trends has never escaped any designers mind. Yes, recreating a modern outfit or style, while transforming a brooch to a necklace or embellishing a pair of brooches to the arms of a sleeveless dress, making a vintage style into a new look, but never taking it away.
The impact of a pencil skirt with fishnet stocking, still to this day is a perfect look for any occasion. That beaded dress from the '40's? Just take a look around Neiman Marcus for an evening dress...vintage has not went away, just modified. There's a revival in todays fashion that proves that vintage production has long lasted any other style. Style...not trend. It's always about that fared full dress and skirt nobody can compete with. So, it's long term look has had to be created around it, not in place of it.
WHY HAS IT LASTED SO LONG? Women have always wanted to feel femine and adorn, even if they don't express it. So marketing a full flair dress/skirt you can twirl in hasn't really went away. It may have not been exposed as much, but it has never left us. Look at where we are now; gingham, polka dots, shoulders designed to make the waist appear smaller, these creations have only injected themselves to different views.
Ultimately, taking a look back at those vintage styles have only held up the runway. Designers have only reimagined vintage looks from the past to inspire their ideas. Looks have metamorphosised, and we're now at the point we're able to be reminiscent on the runway.
WHY ARE VINTAGE TRENDS AROUND TODAY? With all the choices designers have given us, we have so many opportunities to express ourselves. Notice a lot more corsets out there? Remember wearing a corset under a pant suit as a blouse? So easy to switch that pant suit into an outfit for going out. Take off the pants and trade them in for fishnets and lacy bloomer shorts and your off to the club to go dancing. Cinq-A-Sept has a great corset top out, so it's still the corset in style, but transformed into a new design. Will goth ever go out of style? Diors 2024 runway has escalated the look with a long shiny black coat paired with fishnets. I don't think comfort and coolness are ever leaving us, so grunge is still around. It's amplified from Nirvana to a more edgy look today. Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui both put together Dr. Martins and stripes giving us built in comfort and coolness. Taking away any kind of punk style? Never, anything still goes. Everything has just been resurfaced; BoHo free loving hippy, '80's shoulder pads, and the resist recreation of the draped silk dress worn with a flat Roman sandal? It's back.
CONFIDENCE FROM THE PAST The gift of sharing of, "Way back when," Audrey Hepburn gave us, "The little black dress," that's still on track for every wardrobe to have in the closet...it's not even an option. Marilyn gave us the magic of the halter dress. Knowing it comes in a variety of styles from beach to brunch and then from work to a special occasion, long or short, take it from ordinary to extraordinary. Knowing these styles are currently made for all shapes and any body type gives us confidence. Just to know these looks are not going anywhere gives one self-assurance and we don't have to worry about following any fashion trend. There's no fear of not being up to date on the current looks. The process designed to show off a womans silhouette by these designs we can assert ourselves that's never going to change. The look has been tested and is now everlasting.
